The five failure modes (and their fixes)
Most Claude disappointments fall into a short list. When a response misses:

| Wrong tone | Claude defaults to helpful-and-professional | Name the tone: “conversational,” “authoritative,” “casual.” Paste an example. |
This table is in your head permanently after a week. But write it down anyway — it’s faster to debug a bad response when you can point to one of these five.
The Delegation-Diligence loop
This is the mental model that separates people who trust Claude on real work from people who only use it for low-stakes tasks.
Here’s how it works:
- Pick a recurring task you already do — something where you have past examples of good output
- Find 3-5 examples of that task done well (your own work)
- Ask Claude to reproduce one of them with a prompt you’d actually use
- Compare side-by-side. Where did it hit? Where did it miss?
- Update the prompt. Test again.
- If it gets close after a few rounds: you’ve built a reusable workflow. If it consistently misses on the things that matter: don’t delegate this task.
The key insight from this loop: validation builds confidence, but it doesn’t eliminate responsibility. You’re the one who knows if the output is actually good. Claude can’t evaluate its own work the way you can. Your judgment doesn’t go away — it gets concentrated on the 20% that matters most.
AI Fluency: the bigger picture
There’s an underlying framework behind all the prompting advice: four competencies that Anthropic (in collaboration with academic researchers) calls the 4D Framework for AI Fluency.
- Delegation — Deciding what goes to AI versus what stays with you
- Description — Communicating clearly enough that Claude understands what you actually want
- Discernment — Evaluating outputs critically, not accepting them at face value
- Diligence — Using AI responsibly and owning the results
Prompting tricks are Description. Knowing when not to use Claude is Delegation. Catching hallucinations is Discernment. Taking accountability for AI-assisted work is Diligence.
You’re already practicing these — this lesson just gives them names.
Things to try right now (5 minutes)
Grab something Claude got wrong this week (or last time you used it). Pick it apart using the failure mode table above. Which one was it? Rewrite the prompt to fix just that one thing. Compare the outputs.
If you don’t have a recent bad output: go produce one on purpose. Ask Claude something vague and watch what generic looks like. Then add context and watch what changes.
